What Is a Local SEO Grid Ranking Report?
A standard rank report tells you that you’re ranked #4 for “dentist Boulder.” A grid ranking report tells you that you’re #1 from your own office, #4 from the Pearl Street Mall, #11 from CU Boulder’s main entrance, and you don’t appear at all from north Boulder past Iris. The first kind of report is a number on a page. The second is a map of where your phone rings and where it goes silent.
That difference matters because the first report flatters you. The second one shows you the truth. We’ve watched business owners look at a green-and-red heatmap and physically lean back in their chair, because the version of “I rank pretty well in Boulder” they’ve been carrying around for two years just dissolved on contact with reality.
This piece explains what a local SEO grid ranking report actually is, how to read one, which tools generate them, what they cost, and what to do with the findings. By the end you should be able to evaluate your own listing’s geographic visibility honestly and know whether to commission a report, run one yourself, or hire someone to do both.
What a grid ranking report shows you
A grid ranking report (also called a geo-grid heatmap, geo-grid scan, or local rank grid) plots your business’s Google Maps ranking for a chosen keyword across a grid of geographic points around your business address. Each point in the grid is treated as a simulated searcher: the tool asks Google “what businesses appear for [keyword] from this exact GPS coordinate?” and records where your business shows up in the results.
The output is a square grid, typically 5x5, 7x7, 9x9, 11x11, 13x13, or up to 21x21 depending on the tool and plan. Each cell of the grid is colored by the rank you achieved from that simulated point: green for top three, yellow for 4-10, orange for 11-20, red for 20+ or not ranking. The center of the grid is your business address. The grid extends outward at a chosen radius (typically 1 to 5 miles in dense metros, 5 to 25 miles in rural service areas).
Read across one row or down one column and you can see how your visibility changes as a searcher moves through your service area. Green cells are revenue-positive territory. Red cells are dark zones where you may as well not exist for that keyword.
A real example, drawn from numbers
Imagine a Boulder-based home cleaning service tracking the keyword “house cleaning Boulder” on a 7x7 grid with 1.5-mile spacing between points. The center cell (their address near 28th and Pearl) returns #2. The two cells north of center, both within a mile, return #3 and #4. Two miles east toward the foothills returns #1 (probably because the next-closest competitor is further). Two miles south toward Table Mesa returns #14. Three miles west into south Boulder returns #28, off the visible grid entirely.
That single report tells the owner several things their flat rank report could not:
- They have strong visibility in central and north Boulder.
- They lose prominence dramatically going south, suggesting a south-Boulder competitor with better local signals.
- They have an unexpected pocket of dominance to the east, which they could exploit in marketing.
- Their service area on the GBP probably needs to extend further south, or they need to build south-Boulder-specific content and reviews.
That’s a far more actionable strategic input than “you rank #4 in Boulder.”
How the underlying tech actually works
Every grid ranking tool does roughly the same thing under the hood. The mechanism is worth understanding because it affects accuracy and what kinds of grids you can ask for.
The tool takes your specified keyword and your specified grid (size and spacing). For each cell in the grid, it constructs a search query that includes the GPS coordinates of that cell. There are two ways to do this:
The UULE-parameter method (used by Local Falcon, GeoRanker, and Geogrid). The tool appends a uule= URL parameter to the Google search request. The UULE parameter is a base64-encoded string that tells Google “treat this search as if it came from these exact coordinates.” This produces results identical to a real searcher physically standing at those coordinates with location services enabled.
The IP-proxy method (historically used by some BrightLocal grid tracking and a few older tools). The tool routes the search through a proxy server located in the city or region of interest. This produces approximate-location results but not pinpoint-coordinate results. Coarser, but cheaper to run.
UULE-based grids are the gold standard. If you’re commissioning a report, ask the provider which method they use. The difference shows up most in dense metros where two coordinates a half-mile apart can produce noticeably different rankings.
How to read a grid ranking report
The visual is intuitive (color-coded cells), but the strategic reading is where most people get it wrong. Five things to look for, in this order.
1. The Average Map Rank (AMR). Most tools compute a single number that averages your rank across all cells, weighting equally or by cell size. AMR is the cleanest summary metric. AMR of 4.2 on a 7x7 grid means your business shows up at an average rank of 4.2 across 49 simulated searches in your service area. AMR is a tracker. You don’t optimize for AMR directly. You optimize the inputs and watch AMR move.
2. The Solv (Share of Local Voice). A complementary metric, sometimes called Map Pack Visibility or Local Visibility Score. This is the percentage of cells where you appear in the top 3. Solv of 35 percent means you’re in the 3-pack from a third of the simulated points. Solv is more business-relevant than AMR because the 3-pack is where calls actually originate.
3. The shape of the green zone. Is it a circle around your address (typical for prominence-driven rankings)? Is it skewed in one direction (suggesting a competitor on the opposite side suppressing you)? Is it patchy and irregular (suggesting weak signal that’s getting beaten by random competitors)? The shape tells you whether your problem is one specific competitor or a general weakness.
4. The boundary where green turns to yellow turns to red. That boundary is your effective service radius for that keyword. If you’ve defined your GBP service area at 25 miles but your green-yellow boundary is at 3 miles, you’re claiming a service area you can’t actually fulfill in search.
5. The keyword-by-keyword variation. A single grid for a single keyword is one snapshot. Run grids for your top 5-10 keywords and compare. You may discover you dominate “emergency plumber Boulder” but barely show for “drain cleaning Boulder,” which would tell you exactly what services pages and reviews to build out next.

The cost math
A 21x21 grid is 441 cells, which means 441 simulated Google searches. On Local Falcon’s credit system, a 21x21 scan runs roughly $1.65 at full rate (sometimes less with annual plans). The question isn’t whether grid scanning is expensive. It isn’t. The question is what cadence makes sense. What to do with the findings
A grid report is diagnostic. It tells you where you stand. The remediation depends on what you find.
If you have a strong center and a sharp dropoff: this usually means your prominence is okay near your address but you don’t have local content or reviews mentioning the further-out neighborhoods. Add neighborhood-specific service pages with real content (named streets, named landmarks, named ZIP codes) and start asking customers in those neighborhoods specifically for reviews that mention their neighborhood by name.
If you have an asymmetric green zone (strong on one side, weak on the other): usually a competitor on the weak side is eating your prominence. Run a competitor analysis, look at their review count and velocity, look at their citation profile, and identify the specific gap.
If you have a weak center (low rank even at your own address): this is the most concerning pattern, because it usually means your relevance signal is wrong. A note on commissioning a report from an agency

Can I run a grid scan myself or do I need to hire someone?

Can I see my competitor’s grid scan?
