Multiple physical locations. Businesses that genuinely operate from multiple locations can have a separate GBP for each, with the corresponding proximity advantage in each area. This is the most direct way to expand your coverage map. It also costs real money to maintain real locations.
Virtual offices and “ghost” locations. Setting up a mailbox or virtual office in another part of town with a separate GBP. This was widely abused in the early 2020s and Google has gotten visibly stricter about validating real operational presence. As of 2025-2026, GBPs at virtual office addresses are increasingly suspended on review. Don’t do this.
Service-area pages on the website. This expands your coverage on organic local results (the blue links below the local pack), which is a meaningful surface even if it doesn’t help with the pack itself.
Ad spend. Google Ads with location targeting can put you on top of the local pack visually for queries you don’t rank organically for. This is a paid solution, not an SEO solution, but it’s worth knowing it’s there.
For most small businesses with a single physical location, the realistic posture is to accept proximity as a constraint and optimize the non-proximity factors as hard as possible. Strong GBP, steady reviews, well-structured website, quality local backlinks. The compounding effect of these factors expands your coverage map at the edges, even if you can’t change the center.
A mini case study: the geo-grid in action
Imagine a hypothetical Boulder family law practice located near downtown Boulder. The owner is frustrated because the practice ranks #2 for “family lawyer Boulder” when she searches from her office, but she’s hearing from prospects in north Boulder, Gunbarrel, and Niwot that they couldn’t find the practice in their searches.

Six months later, we re-pull the grid. Top-3 coverage has expanded from 12% of the grid to 31%. The practice is now in the top 5 in most squares within 2 miles, not just within 0.5 miles.
