SEO for restaurants

We know what Boulder restaurant websites look like under the hood, because we crawled all of them.

This is not a guess about your industry

We built Taste Boulder, a directory of every restaurant, cafe, bar and brewery in the city. Building it meant pulling all 668 Boulder food and drink businesses from Google, crawling every website we could reach, and reading more than 1,900 published menus.

That left us with a scorecard of what is missing from each one. Here is what Boulder looks like:

76%
have no Restaurant schema markup
so Google cannot read their menu, hours or price range properly
64%
have no online booking
every reservation is a phone call someone has to answer
56%
capture no email addresses
no way to bring a happy guest back next month
30%
have no menu online at all
the single most-searched thing about any restaurant
11%
have an unclaimed Google listing
they cannot even reply to their own reviews
10%
have no website whatsoever
the platforms own that relationship entirely

If most of your competitors are missing the same things you are, that is not a reason to relax. It means the ones who fix them first take the search results for the whole city.

What actually moves the needle for a restaurant

Restaurant SEO is unusually concrete. People search for a small number of things, they search them locally, and they decide fast. These are the fixes that show up in bookings rather than in a report.

Your menu, as text Google can read

A menu published as a PDF or a photograph is invisible. We hit this constantly while building the directory: some of the best restaurants in Boulder had menus our crawler could not read at all, which means Google is reading them no better. Your menu should be real text on a real page, with prices, marked up so a search engine knows what it is looking at.

A complete, claimed Google Business Profile

For a restaurant this outranks almost everything else, and 11% of Boulder venues have not even claimed theirs. Hours, photos, menu link, reservation link, attributes, and replies to every review, good and bad.

Restaurant schema markup

Three quarters of Boulder restaurants have none. It is the difference between Google guessing what your page is and being told: cuisine, price range, hours, menu, accepts reservations. It is invisible to your guests and load-bearing for search.

Owning the guest relationship

Delivery platforms take 15% to 30% of an order while the median full-service restaurant keeps 2.8% of sales before tax. The commission on one app order is roughly the profit on nine direct ones. Getting found directly, and capturing an email when you do, is worth more than any single ranking.

Showing up in AI answers

More diners now ask an assistant where to eat. Those answers are assembled from structured, readable, well-cited pages. The same work that fixes your menu for Google is what gets you quoted by an AI.

Why a restaurant directory, and why it matters to you

Taste Boulder exists because Boulder had no complete, current guide to its own restaurants with real menu prices in it. Building one meant solving the same problems your website has: getting menus machine-readable, getting listings accurate, getting photographs attached to the right business.

If your restaurant is listed there and something is wrong, or you have opened, changed or closed, tell us here and we will fix it. That part is free and always will be.
